Grand Opening Day

The Giving Garden was officially “opened” today with a ribbon cutting ceremony. There was a Presentation of the Colors Ceremony, Pledge of Allegiance, and opening words from Willie Lane. Paster Woody spoke and offered a prayer, Cathy Henesey from Keep Carrollton Beautiful spoke and Carrollton’s Mayor, Ron Branson, presented a proclamation naming April, 2010 “Community Gardening Month.” The ribbon was cut appropriately with gardening shears.

Gardeners received terrific news this week that water will soon be installed in the garden. Not too much longer of lugging gallons to water the beds! Despite the lack of water and gale force winds, the vegetables are ruggedly growing. Fourteen more beds are planned for Phase II and we are hopeful of starting soon. The water will be extended throughout the entire garden, including Phase I and II. As soon as the water is set, a work day will be set the spread mulch in the pathways around the beds.
The Giving Garden has five Eagle Scout projects currently in progress. Scouts will be putting a fence around the garden, building compost bins, a storage shed, handicap-accessible beds, vegetable cleaning tables, picnic benches, a gazebo and the children’s beds. Thank you scouts!
There will be a gardener’s meeting on Saturday, May 1, at 10 a.m. at the garden. There will be refreshments and all Giving Garden gardeners are invited. The purpose is to get to know each other and to go over gardening rules.
Happy gardening!

Building the Beds

Here are some pictures of our work party last Saturday. In the last post, I neglected to thank the volunteers at Aldersgate United Methodist Church for providing workers with water, coffee and donuts. Church volunteers were on hand throughout
the day to keep everyone well hydrated. Thank you so much!

Phase 1 – 18 Beds

Phase I-18 4’x20′ beds-is now complete thanks to over 100 volunteers who came to the Giving Garden work party yesterday. A mountain of dirt was moved, 20′ long cedar boards were cut and assembled, soil was turned, and young and old alike made for an incredibly productive day. If you haven’t stopped by to check out the progress, be sure to take a look. Parking is available in the south Kroger parking lot. It’s just a short hike over the hill, behind the portables.

Besides our beautiful new garden plots, please notice that the wildscape area next to the garden is now virtually free of litter. Thanks to the helping hands of all our scout volunteers and many other community helpers, The Giving Garden of Carrollton is just about ready for planting.
Work on soliciting funds for the completion of Phase II is in progress. We are all anxious to complete this next section as soon as the money is raised. Donations can be sent to , The Giving Garden of Carrollton, c/o Keep Carrollton Beautiful, PO Box 111175, Carrollton, TX 75011.

Phase 1 Work Day Scheduled

Lots of exciting things are happening! The work day to complete Phase I, has been set for Saturday, February 27, with two shifts, 9-12 a.m. and 1-4 p.m (weather permitting). On Saturday we plan on building and preparing the beds for Phase I. All the beds in this phase are spoken for and we are taking names for the waiting list for Phase II. Any work not completed on Saturday will be finished in the afternoon of Sunday, February 28.

Anyone who would like to help with the work party is invited to come and see the work in progress. Please bring tools (shovels, rigid rakes, wheel barrows, cordless power drills, black and white newspapers or cardboard). Don’t forget to wear boots and bring your garden gloves. It might be muddy!
We have several scout troops who have volunteered to help with various elements of the garden plans. Prospective Eagle Scouts are planning to build the fence and garden gate, compost bins, a storage shed, the children’s beds, a gazebo, handicap-accessible beds, and some of our garden beds. Scouts are also making the plaques for the numbering of the beds. Thank you to our boy and girl scouts! We are so appreciative of all your help.

Board Decision – Let’s Garden

The board met on Wednesday, Jan. 27 and decided to plan for a late February work party to start putting the garden plots together. We are starting to get commitments from businesses in our community. Check out our sponsor list on this page.

Because we’re starting from scratch and putting together all the materials and supplies to get the garden up an going will be costly, we are soliciting donations. Any contributions can be mailed to Keep Carrollton Beautiful, c/o The Giving Garden of Carrollton, PO Box 111175, Carrollton, TX 75011.
Gardeners are beginning to sign up for their garden plots. The plots will be 4′ by 20′ and will cost $25. Half plots will be available to $15. If interested, please follow the link at the bottom of this page.
Spring is just around the corner. Time to start planning the garden!

A Community Garden for Carrollton

With the assistance of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Keep Carrollton Beautiful, the City of Carrollton, and numerous volunteers, Carrollton’s first community garden is taking shape. The garden will be located behind Aldersgate UMC, 3926 Old Denton Road, between the church and Kroger (at the corner of Old Denton and Hebron).

The mission of the garden is to grow community, food and knowledge. The voluntary board is meeting regularly to establish procedures and prepare for a planned spring opening. Any interested person(s) will be invited to fill out an application for a plot as long as the space is available. Fifty percent (50) of the food grown in the garden will be donated to a local service organization to assist those in need in our community.
The board is now pursuing donations from local businesses to meet the needs of establishing the garden plots. A local boy scout who is working on his Eagle badge is offering enormous assistance in building our fence and compost bins.
More information will follow soon.
